Are you willing and able to do this?
Managing your business is an active, continuous process.
The materials in this website can only explain what needs to be done. It’s up to you to actually do what’s needed. And for many people this is a significant, and possibly difficult, adjustment from past behavior.
The threshold question is: Are you willing and able to take on the management role your business needs?
How much time, energy, and attention will it take?
The amount of time, energy, and attention required for the proper management of your business depends on the size and complexity of your business. If your business is comprised of just you (what I sometimes call a micro-business), not a lot of time, energy, and attention will be required for management. The 5 BIZactly Plan elements have the same application, but they can be managed without taking a substantial amount of time, energy, and attention away from your other activities.
However, if your business is a larger enterprise, proper management will require significantly more of your time, energy, and attention. The primary reason is the involvement of more people, who have to be constantly managed. In addition, the larger enterprise usually has a broader scope of operations, is engaged in more and different activities, confronts more problems and challenges, and requires a larger and more complicated support system.
Like it or not, once you’ve added an employee or two (or more), you’re engaged in “enterprise development” and your management role must expand with it.
Are you ready to make the transition?
Many people make this management transition poorly as their business grows from a micro-business to a larger enterprise. The larger management role demanded by the growing enterprise is frequently at odds with the simpler production role that many business owners have previously established for themselves. And business owners often find that some of the new management responsibilities are outside their comfort zone. Unfortunately, your business will suffer badly until this management role is properly filled.
The bottom-line is this: the business improvement you want requires management action. Enterprise development, especially, will require significant time, energy, and attention, every day, every week, and every month. To execute your management role effectively, you must carve out the necessary space from everything else you are doing.
But the payoff is huge.
